Why our programs are important
(1) A Free of Charge School (junior and senior high school)
The privatization of education in Indonesia is marked with the reduction of the government’s responsibility for subsidizing education services to the community. Pursuant to Law of National Education System No. 20/2003, the community is demanded to be responsible for providing their own education services. Consequently, only the members of community of medium-upper class that can be able to access to education, while the poor children drop out of school. The result is 25 million (10%) of Indonesian people are illiterate, even in the world, Indonesia ranks 6 in total children drop out of school. In Special Region-Jakarta Capital, total children drop out of school are more than 7000 each year. In this respect, RMD, on July 19, 1999 held a free of charge school which is intended to provide free of charge education for socially disadvantaged children. RMD has more than 200 students now.
(2)Vocational Training
Various vocational trainings, such as sewing, computer, driving, motorcycle repair, accounting, and security have been being provided by RMD to more than 100 needy children (some of them are vulnerable female children to trafficking). They are trained for 6 months and after that they will return to their homes/villages to open their own business or some of them work accordance with their skills. To run this vocational training program, RMD work together with other institutions. This training ensures their independence and a working career.
(3)Microfinance
We call it as Bank for the poor. RMD provide access to small loan to the poor people. At the moment more than 100 poor people have already been provided small loans by RMD Microfinance. It is an effective poverty reduction strategy and often is considered one of flexible strategy in the fight against global poverty. It is suitable and sustainable to respond to the urgent needs of those living on less than US$1 a day.
(4) Orphanage
RMD seeks to provide more than just housing to orphans and street kids. It seeks to make them independent and responsible. In our orphanage we have over forty children ranging from 1 to 18 year. Most of them are orphans and ex-street kids. Since moving to their new home these children have undergone an amazing transformation. Prior to coming to the orphanage all of them had grown up malnourished. Today, however, in their new home our children are embracing a life they have never known – a healthy diet, an education, being nurtured and cared for and having the freedom to simply be children.
